Jerusalem – History & Art

These photos are from an adventure into the history of an ancient and contentious city. We visited the Israel Museum first, in the new city of Jerusalem, and then forayed into the old city. The Israel Museum is phenomenal, and huge. It has a grand array of exhibits, from the 7 dead sea scrolls, to a giant model of Jerusalem and the second temple, to art history, to modern and contemporary art. These are just a few of the many. The museum itself is comprised of multiple buildings and wings, and surrounding gardens. It is simply not possible to see everything in one day. I must say, I think that this is one of my favourite museums, and I can easily pass by hour after hour captivated by exhibit after exhibit.

These are photos from an installation titled “Big bambu” which was quite spectacular.

10,000 bamboo poles, 80,000 meters of climbing rope, 25 rock climbers, 7 weeks, 350 hours, and not a single architectural sketch. American artists Mike and Doug Starn were invited to use the Museum’s Art Garden to create Big Bambú – a 17-meter high installation built entirely of bamboo. The artists chose to name their Jerusalem installation 5,000 Arms to Hold You.”

Jerusalem – the old city. I find this to be one of the most fascinating places in the world that I have experienced, for both it’s culture and history, but primarily it’s current state of existence as a result of these.
